I Spy Flip & Find

Game Review: ‘I SPY Flip & Find’ from Briarpatch

The I SPY Flip & Find travel card game from University Games’s Briarpatch features Scholastic picture riddles that will keep players on their toes as they try to be the first to find matches.

Scholastic has long been a visual leader with its many publications like the I SPY books, making for a perfect combination with Briarpatch’s gaming expertise. The product is a game that is easily transportable, readily replayable, and so much fun for kids that adults will want to join in.

Play on the Go

The I SPY Flip & Find cards come in a handy tin that fits well into a bag or big pocket. This tin holds 62 cards in pairs, featuring a wide range of eye-catching items. Each I SPY card is arranged around a theme, such as small toys like plastic dinosaurs or marbles, tools like pins and buttons, or the beach with plenty of sand and seashells. In addition, the tin contains a thicker cardboard Match Pad, the goal to grab whenever players see a match.

Easy Gameplay

A game of I SPY Flip & Find begins with shuffling the cards so no one knows what might come next. The deck is placed face-down in the middle of the players so that everyone can see. Players then take turns flipping the top of the deck so it shows face-up in the play area. If the card does not match any one of the ones that have already been flipped, nothing happens, and play continues. If it does match, then the game has truly begun.

The immediate objective of I SPY Flip & Find is to be the first to recognize two matching cards. At that point, they yell “Match!” and grab the Match Pad. The player collects the matching pair and replaces the Match Pad, and the game starts again with the next card flip. The player to collect the most matching pairs by the time the deck runs out is the winner.

An Escalating Game

Because there are 31 pairs in I SPY Flip & Find, the odds of drawing a match at the beginning of the game are fairly low. This will lead to players turning over several cards and building out a field of play that players will have to study and recognize for matching. Clever players will mentally file away the themes or major objects in each one so they know what to look for in each new card flip. Once the matches begin, they will come faster and faster until the final flip will be a test to see who can call out “Match!” first.

I SPY Flip & Find is a game for two to four players aged four and up. Games usually take around 10 to 15 minutes, making it move fairly quickly, especially after the midpoint. Because it is a memory and reflex game, most of the analytical skills are even between younger and older players. This might make it a fun time for family game night or for siblings on a trip.
