This year’s Anthem Film Festival, the tenth annual, had its share of short film spice.

The tenth annual Anthem Film Festival moves from the Paris Casino to Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, July 13-16. The film festival, part of the libertarian-themed FreedomFest conference, showcases both features and documentaries, exploring issues around social and political liberty. Anthem will feature over 25 liberty-oriented films during its four-day run.

Three films chosen for this year’s Anthem Libertarian Film Festival were created in Iran. Film festival director Jo Ann Skousen said how glad she was to have these submissions, given the risks filmmakers took making the films.

It takes a long time to perfect a film. Last year, the producers of No Safe Spaces brought it to the Anthem Film Festival to get feedback on their work-in-progress. This year, they were back at Anthem with a “95% done version.” But, as true creatives, they were still open to suggestions for improvements. Not many improvements will likely be needed, as the film won the Anthem Grand Prize for director Justin Folk and producer Mark Joseph.

“Go to where the light is” may seem a strange directive for someone seeking to escape from a totalitarian regime until one sees a photo of North Korea and its neighbors taken from a satellite. Yeonmi Park’s tale of her escape reveals that not only is the darkness physical, but spiritual as well.

Alice had to step through the looking glass to discover a strange world where everything was backwards and made no sense. Filmmaker Kevin Bowe only had to go to New Hampshire during the 2015 presidential primary. His film, Democracy Through the Looking Glass: Media & Politics in the Post-Truth Era, screened at the Anthem Film Festival, part of FreedomFest. FreedomFest, a libertarian political and financial conference, now in its tenth year, bills itself as the worlds “largest gathering of free minds."
