The Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) brings the ambitious and explosive energy of Legally Blonde – The Musical to the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore from July 29 to August 16, 2026.
And SRT certainly succeeds in its staging of this high-octane show, anchored by West End alumna Nathania Ong (Les Miserables and Hamilton), who takes on the lead role with vocal precision and effortless charisma. She navigates complex, belt-heavy vocal runs with stunning ease, effortlessly matching her flawless singing with high-tempo choreography – with even a bit of gymnastics thrown into the mix.
Backing Ong’s star turn is a veritable powerhouse of Singapore musical theater stalwarts: Dwayne Lau, Benjamin Chow, Vanessa Kee, and Siti Khalijah Zainal. Together with an army of rising performers, they elevate the show into a rousing, adrenaline-fueled, and electric triumph.
Based on the movie of the same name that starred Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde tells the tale of Elle Woods, who tackles Harvard Law School in pursuit of a lost love, only to find herself capable of bigger and better things as she takes on her first case defending a client with whom only she can connect.
Whilst it might have seemed an odd choice to cast the Singaporean-Chinese Ong in a role so deeply rooted in being a natural blonde, Black and Asian performers have taken on this role successfully on worldwide stages. Ong absolutely loses herself in the role of Elle Woods, maintaining a crisp American accent that echoes Witherspoon so effectively that you completely look past her race within the first few minutes of her appearing on stage.
Deftly directed by Kate Golledge, the production captivates with its colorful sets, vibrant costumes, striking choreography by Simon Lee Hardwick, and an exuberant dynamism within this ensemble cast. This energy is so powerful that it completely masks the score’s weaker melodies, uplifting even the most lackluster songs. (This wasn’t the case when Base Entertainment brought in a touring production in June 2018, which this critic reviewed here).
SRT’s Legally Blonde – The Musical is absolutely a must-watch production that is sure to score nominations at next year’s Straits Times Life Theatre Awards – which, incidentally, should have a separate category for “Musicals/Comedies.” This stellar ensemble especially deserves to be in the running for Best Ensemble, in this musical that should easily contend for Best Production of the Year. What, like it’s hard?
