In celebration of Pride Month, Wild Rice’s verbatim play Girls Girls Girls – with a script constructed from quotes from real interviewees – ran from June 11–27 2026 at the Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre.
Curating from real interviews, playwrights Alfian Sa’at and Deonn Yang (the latter pulled double duty as director) gave audiences a deeply insightful look into the lives of lesbians in Singapore. From fighting tired stereotypes to dealing with biased parents and society to the softness and nurturing characteristics of women in general, Sa’at and Yang seem to have covered every angle imaginable under this theme.
The ensemble of Mehr Dudeja, Eve Voigtlander, Yap Yi Kai and Farah Ong brilliantly held our attention for the duration of the show, which incorporated stories that spanned from comedy to romance and even pure drama.
It’s unfortunate that Wild Rice didn’t qualify for government funding for this show – probably because of the lesbian theme – despite the stories being significant and relevant for any inclusive society of today. It’s good though that Wild Rice still managed to put up such a gay-focused production with an approved public performance license, which is a feat in and of itself indeed.
We need stories that showcase different communities if we are to embrace each other and make a home for one another. And theatre is a wonderful medium to make that happen, as witnessed by this remarkable production.
